First round pick and former Alabama superstar Calvin Ridley is testing his skills on special teams this weekend at rookie mini camp with the Atlanta Falcons Matt Schaub Jersey, according to reports.

Falcons coach Dan Quinn says the franchise is experimenting with Ridley at various positions this summer, including a shot at kickoff and punt return duty.

“So, we got a chance to see him do a variety of things, and that will continue through the OTAs,” Quinn said, via the AJC. “The first impression was that I recognized the competitor that he was because he wanted every rep. That’s a good thing. He wanted to go for it, but today we were trying to feature some of the guys that we wanted to take a look at. He didn’t get as many reps today and I know there was some disappointment on his end.”

A central element of the Crimson Tide s passing game, Ridley rarely dabbled in the return game at Alabama, recording only two punt returns as a sophomore in 2016. He certainly has the speed and athleticism to be a lethal threat on special teams and the Falcons are at least exploring an avenue where he might be able to help.

Atlanta s lead return man, Andre Roberts, was not resigned during the offseason. Ridley is getting a look on kickoff and punt return duty along with Justin Hardy, Marvin Hall and Reggie Davis.

The Falcons ranked 11th in the NFL in kick return average last season at 22.3 yards per attempt. On punt returns, Atlanta finished 20th across the league with a 7.4 yards per return average. The Falcons didn t score a special teams touchdown for the third straight season.

Ridley, a former five star rated as the top ranked wideout nationally in the 2015 class according to the 247Sports Composite, joins former Alabama star Julio Jones and Mohamed Sanuat the top of the depth chart on a team expecting to compete for an NFC South title this fall.

Ridley signed a four year deal with the Falcons earlier this month. Expectations are high for the speedy slot man who was considered the best route runner in this year s draft class.

“We see him as a very versatile receiver who can play inside and outside,” Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said after Ridley was drafted. “He is highly – obviously he’s fast – but he’s highly agile, and he has the ability to stop and start well. He’s got 19 touchdowns in his career. Again, he’s a playmaking type of guy; he’s an explosive guy for us, and that’s the important part.”

Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan recently inked a record setting extension as he looks to join elite company this year when the city of Atlanta hosts Super Bowl LIII at Mercedes Benz Stadium. The Falcons will try to become the first team in NFL history to win the Super Bowl in their own stadium.
